Historical novels , stage-plays and TV dramas set in Tudor England have enjoyed a huge vogue in recent years, and, in the case of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall, have dramatically changed perceptions of the past.

Thomas More, revered by Catholics as a saint and the humane and heroic martyr for individual conscience of Robert Bolt’s Man for All Seasons, is one of villains of Mantel’s novels, “an absent-minded professor with a sideline in torture". In this lecture Reformation historian Eamon Duffy reflects on the ways in which modern fictional accounts of the English Reformation have created, reflected or challenged historical understanding.
