Honorary Life Members 2011

Fr Austin McKeon

Fr McKeon is Chairman of the Tulsk Action Group. Founded in 1992, the Group’s principal aim is to develop the natural resources of the area for the benefit of the whole community. Working closely with State and local agencies and other voluntary organisations, Tulsk Action Group has developed many significant community projects including a voluntary housing development, a respite centre and a new handball alley and the Cruachan Aí Heritage Centre. The Group also facilitated the establishment of Tulsk Parish Services which manages the Tulsk Laundry and Dry-Cleaning Service - a community laundry that provides work for women over 40 years if age; St Ethna’s Restcare Centre - a 10-bed, rest-care centre that allows people be cared for in their own community; and pre-school facilities.

John A. Ruddock

While Headmaster at Villiers School, Limerick, John Ruddock founded, with his wife Doreen and like-minded friends, the Limerick Music Association (now known as the Association of Music Lovers). Under the auspices of the Association (which celebrated its Ruby Anniversary in 2007), John Ruddock organised over 850 concerts and recitals. It is thanks to the efforts of Mr Ruddock and the LMA, that world-class musicians including Isaac Stern, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Deszo Ranki, John O'Conor, Hugh Tinney, Bernadette Greevy, the Takacs, Vogler and Skampa string quartets and the Vienna Boys Choir have given performances in Limerick and Dublin.

In 1986 the Austrian Government awarded Mr Ruddock the Knight’s Cross First Class for promoting Austrian musicians in Ireland. In 1988 he was awarded an Honorary Diploma by the Hungarian Government for his services to music. The University of Limerick awarded Mr Ruddock an Honorary Doctorate in 1997 and in 2004 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

Mr Ruddock has served as a founder member of the National Concert Hall, Dublin and on the Cultural Relations Committee of the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Since retiring and moving back to Dublin he has retained a strong interest in the promotion of music and the development of young musical talent.
