Climate Smart Agriculture

Food security and climate change are two of the world’s major challenges this century. Informed by international expert opinion over an 18 month period, the RDS and the Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA) launched a report in July 2016 on how Ireland could become a global leader in Climate Smart Agriculture.

Climate Smart Agriculture is an internationally agreed framework that involves three main goals:

1. sustainably increasing agricultural productivity and incomes
2. adapting and building resilience to climate change
3. reducing agricultural greenhouse gases emissions where possible

The RDS / IIEA report identifies smart, ambitious and pragmatic solutions for Irish agriculture, and examines how they might be implemented, with a view to increasing the competitiveness of the sector, while also reducing its environmental footprint.

The tenets of this report have become the framework for all other RDS Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee work intiatives. The report was formally launched by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Michael Creed TD.
