Feis Ceoil and RDS Announce New Partnership
Feis Ceoil and RDS are delighted to announce a new partnership. Both organisations share a long history of contributing to the development of classical music performance in Ireland.
The RDS has been the home of the annual Feis Ceoil competition since 1984. This new partnership is a natural progression from the existing relationship between Feis Ceoil, the RDS venue and the annual RDS Music Bursary.
Ireland’s biggest classical music competition now has over 5000 young musicians taking part annually. Since 2003, the winners of five senior Feis Ceoil Competitions have been eligible to apply for the annual €15,000 RDS Music Bursary, designed to assist a young professional musician to develop their career.
Through their competitions and bursaries, for both Feis Ceoil and the RDS the goal is to allow the individual to reach their potential, achieve excellence, and ultimately contribute to Irish cultural life through their superb musicianship.
There is a long history of music performances in the RDS with the first regular music recitals beginning there in 1886 – a full ten years before Feis Ceoil was set up. Since then, Feis Ceoil has been an event of major significance in the development of musical talent in Ireland, with many of its winners having performed on the RDS Concert Hall stage over the years.
“The Feis Ceoil is rightly recognised as the most important classical music competition in Ireland,” said Michael Duffy, CEO of the RDS. “We wish to ensure that the vital work of the Feis Ceoil continues to enrich Ireland culturally and that this partnership forges a new appreciation of the significant contribution made by the RDS to the development and support of Irish classical music.”
Laura Gilsenan, the CEO of Feis Ceoil said, “The Feis Ceoil has set the standard for the performance of classical music since its foundation in 1896. We are delighted to announce this partnership with our friends at the RDS. It will enable us to continue this competition, which plays a vital part in the career development of aspiring professional musicians, as well as a significant role in musical education in Ireland.”
